WINNING WAYS
POSTED: March 20, 2006

The American women continued their string of strong international showings following last year’s worlds this weekend at the International Gymnix meet in Montreal, Canada, and at a World Cup competition in Lyon, France. Particularly dominant were the U.S. juniors in Canada, who swept the event titles. (The U.S. didn’t enter any senior competitors.) Deveau’s Samantha Peszek (pictured left) won the all-around (58.8) over teammates Bridget Sloan, Shawn Johnson and Shantessa Pama, who placed second, third and fourth, respectively. The top three Americans’ scores, incidentally, were higher than senior winner Miki Uemura’s total of 56.55. Peszek also won vault (strong Yurchenko double) and beam (standing full, whip series). Pama won bars and Johnson took the floor title. Except on bars, where Kristina Vaculik (Canada) won silver, American juniors commanded the top two spots on each event.

In France, Cincinnati’s Ashley Priess won beam (14.675) and took a share of the bars silver. Orlando Metro’s Kassi Price tied with Priess on bars (14.6), won bronze on vault and placed fourth on floor—the latter two events being won by China’s Cheng Fei, the reigning vault world champion. The Czech Republic’s Jana Sikulova took the bars gold, besting the Americans by one-tenth. For the U.S. men, Yewki Tomita won the high bar competition (15.425) while Kevin Tan placed a respectable fifth on rings. See below for full results.

World Cup competition continues next week in Cottbus, Germany, where Jana Bieger, Sasha Artemev and Sean Golden are slated to represent the United States.

At the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, the Australian women and Canadian men won the team competitions while Australia's  Chloe Sims and Joshua Jefferis won the all-around titles.
