The City of Indianapolis made a lot of history Thursday, but we’re not just talking about President Bush coming to town.

Hoosier gymnasts of all sizes were setting a record by using the most fundamental move in their sport: the handstand.

"Having one thousand people attempting a record - this is proof that enthusiasm is still high; of course it's high,” said Bela Karolyi, the legendary Olympic coach. He joined in the fun on Thursday.

"Everyone needs to learn handstands for gymnastics. You do it on floor, beams; it's all you need, its very key,” said gymnast Samantha Peszek.

Blaine Wilson said he didn’t know how long he could hold a handstand, although he reckoned around ten minutes. But the three-time Olympian and company only needed to hold the move for ten seconds, and like good gymnasts, practice makes perfect.

The next time we see handstands in the Circle City, medals will be on the line

"This is a great promotion for the sport and important for Indianapolis to gear up and get excited about a major championship: the US Nationals,” said Karolyi.
